What are the English levels A1 to C2?

They are the six bands of the CEFR — the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, published by the Council of Europe. A1 and A2 are basic, B1 and B2 are independent, and C1 and C2 are proficient. Each band is defined by what you can DO in the language rather than by how much grammar you have covered.

What English level do I need for a job?

B2 is the practical bar for an English-medium job interview in India: at B2 you can argue a point, discuss your own field and speak with a fluent speaker without either of you straining. B1 is usually enough for a role where English is used but not central. Very few jobs genuinely require C1, and almost none require C2.

How do I know my English level?

Judge it on speaking, not on reading — for most Indian learners the two are years apart, and the speaking one is what a level is supposed to describe. A quick self-test: if you can hold a five-minute conversation with a stranger about your work and come away having said what you meant, you are at least B1. If you can disagree with somebody and keep the conversation comfortable, you are at B2.

A1–C2 is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), published by the Council of Europe — the framework itself is here.
